Abram leads Jackfish over Maple Leafs
By ROD MAWHOOD
Ben Abram threw the first ever Welland Jackfish complete game shutout in a 10-0 final over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Abram gave up only four hits, while striking out 11 Leafs as the Jackfish improved to (3-3) on the young season.
"Ben is a horse, and the best pitcher in the league," said Welland manager Brian Essery. "We just let him lead us."
Steven Moretto led the Fish at the dish going 3-for-5 with a long home run and three runs batted in.
"Moretto has continued the way he left off last season," Essery said. "He's a really good ball player, and leader on the team."
Ethan Hunt also had three hits as every Jackfish starter registered at least one base knock. The win came after a two-plus hour rain delay in which over 1,100 fans stayed to witness the victory.
"We love playing in front of our fans and want to perform every time out for them," added Essery.
Welland visits Toronto Sunday afternoon to complete the home and home set. The Jackfish next home game is Thursday night, May 30, against the Brantford Red Sox presented by McDonald's.
