Welland sees five-game win streak end

By Rod Mawhood

The Welland Jackfish had their five-game win streak snapped in a 6-5 loss to the Barrie Baycats in front of another capacity crowd at The Pond.

Barrie opened a 4-0 fourth inning lead, and that increased to 6-2 in the seventh inning.

The Jackfish didn't help themselves, committing three errors as starter Enrique Saldana was saddled with the loss after giving up only one earned run.

"Yes, it was of those games where we didn't play particularly well in any facet, however we battled until the end and had a chance to tie it or win it in the ninth (inning)." said Welland Manager Brian Essery

Essery's right as designated hitter Greyson Barrett almost single handedly got the Jackfish back into the game with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in.

"Barrett was fantastic," Essery said. "He kept us in the game. Two huge home runs that got us back in the game. He gave us a chance tonight."

Welland visits Chatham-Kent Sunday afternoon before hosting the Hamilton Cardinals Thursday night.
