Defending Champion Jackfish Open 2026 Season With Road Victory in Brantford

BRANTFORD, ON — The Welland Jackfish opened the 2026 Canadian Baseball League season in impressive fashion Friday night, defeating the Brantford Red Sox 13-1 at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
The defending Dominico Cup champions used a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching performance to secure the season-opening victory and begin their title defence on a winning note.
After a scoreless opening three innings, the Jackfish offense broke through in the fourth and continued to build momentum throughout the evening. Welland’s lineup produced timely hits up and down the order, highlighted by Ethan Mann, who finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Starting pitcher Ben Abram delivered a strong outing on the mound, limiting Brantford’s offense and setting the tone early for the Jackfish staff. Welland’s pitching corps combined to hold the Red Sox to just one run in the contest.
The Jackfish put the game out of reach in the seventh inning, erupting for nine runs to extend their lead and seal the victory.
“It was a great way to begin the season,” said Welland Manager Brian Essery. “Our pitchers competed well, we played solid defensively, and the offense continued to put pressure on throughout the game.”
The win marks the start of Welland’s pursuit of back-to-back championships following the club’s 2025 Dominico Cup title.
