Four-run eighth sends Jackfish past Leafs

Welland, Ontario -- Eric Marriott's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Welland Jackfish to a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday afternoon. 

Marriott's two-run hit was the big blow in the inning as Welland (3-5) sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs on six hits. Dennis Dei Baning tied the game with an RBI single early in the eighth, and Nolan Pettapiece scored an insurance run late in the inning. Pettipiece and Marriott each had two hits, while Cole Warken went 3-for-5 with a triple and RBI. 

Zachary Cameron (1-0) threw two scoreless innings of relief for the win. He gave up a hit, walked one, and struck out two. Welland starter Christian Young fanned nine over seven innings. He scattered four hits and allowed two runs and a walk. 

Garret Takamatsu went 2-for-4 for Toronto with a double, home run, and two RBI. The Leafs (3-4) mustered five hits overall. 

Leafs reliever Matthias Trondson (0-1) allowed all four runs in the eighth. He gave up seven hits in 2.1 innings, striking out one. Toronto starter Andrew Hyde allowed an unearned run in five three-hit innings, walking two and striking out four.
