By ROD MAWHOOD
The Welland Jackfish opened their 2025 season with an impressive 9-3 victory over the defending Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) champion Barrie Baycats in front of a sold-out crowd at The Pond in the Rose City.
After falling behind 1-0, the Jackfish would reel off eight straight runs.
"Great to get the first one out of the way, and to beat a really good team is nice," said Welland Manager Brian Essery.
Starter Ben Abram impressed again for the Jackfish, going seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven Baycats.
"Ben just does what he does, he's so good and gives you a great start every time out," Essery said
Jonah Weisner, hitting leadoff, went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, and some stellar play at shortstop. He was a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
"Weisner had a great game at the plate and in the field," explained Essery.
Gio Morello had four hits, while Greyson Barrett had three hits ,including a home run in the victory.
"Great crowd and atmosphere tonight, so much fun playing in front of them," Essery added.
The Jackfish visit Hamilton Sunday afternoon to open a home and home against the Cardinals. Hamilton visits Welland Stadium Thursday night.
