Jackfish batter Red Sox 15-2

The Welland Jackfish continued their strong start to the 2026 season Thursday night, erupting for 15 runs over the final five innings in a convincing 15-2 victory over the Brantford Red Sox at Welland Stadium.
With the win, the Jackfish improved to 6-2 on the season.
Brantford grabbed an early 1-0 lead and held the advantage through four innings before Welland's offence finally found its rhythm. The Jackfish tied the game in the fifth before taking complete control with a four-run sixth inning and an explosive eight-run eighth inning that put the game well out of reach.
"We started a little slow at the plate, but from the fifth inning on we really got things going," said Welland manager Brian Essery.
"We have such a solid lineup from one through nine. There aren't many breaks for opposing pitchers and eventually the pressure starts to build. It was a really complete team effort tonight."
The top of the Jackfish lineup led the charge offensively.
Leadoff hitter Daiki Abe reached base consistently and crossed the plate four times, while Jonah Weisner continued his hot start to the season with four RBIs. James Smibert provided one of the biggest swings of the night, launching his first home run of the season and finishing with three RBIs.
The offensive attack was relentless as Welland piled up 14 hits and took advantage of several free passes and defensive miscues by the visitors. Nearly every Jackfish hitter contributed as the team turned a tight contest into a rout over the final three innings.
While the bats stole the headlines, starting pitcher Ben Abram delivered another outstanding performance on the mound.
The right-hander worked eight strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. Abram kept the Red Sox off balance throughout the evening, retiring hitters efficiently and giving the Jackfish offense time to break the game open.
"It was another great outing for Ben," Essery said. "Every time he takes the ball he gives us a chance to win. He attacks the strike zone, works quickly, and keeps us in a great position."
The bullpen closed out the ninth inning as Welland secured its fourth victory in its last five games.
The Jackfish will look to keep the momentum rolling Saturday night when they welcome the Barrie Baycats to Welland Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
