Jackfish battle back to best Majors

By ROD MAWHOOD

The Welland Jackfish improved to (5-3) on the season with a walk-off win over the London Majors.

The Majors opened leads of 4-0 and 5-4 before the Jackfish used the long ball to tie the game on two occasions, and eventually win it late.

First it was Steven Moretto with a three-run jack, followed by solo-shot from Brandon Hupe.

"Moretto's three-run home run energized the entire bench," said Welland Manager Brian Essery.

"And Hupe with a huge home run to tie it."

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, London reliever Victor Payano walked Matteo Porcellato, scoring Ethan Hunt from third base to give the Jackfish the 6-5 victory.

Closer Deivy Mendez picked up the win in relief.

"The pitchers all gave us a chance to win, and that's all we can ask of them," Essery said.

"That was a really big win. Hopefully we can get going now."

The Jackfish visit Kitchener Sunday afternoon, before welcoming the newest addition to the Intercounty Baseball League - the Chatham Barnstormers - to The Pond Thursday evening.
