Jackfish break all-time season attendance record in win over London
By ROD MAWHOOD
Chants of 'Tyler Dupuis, Tyler Dupuis, Tyler Dupuis,' were heard by 2,282 fans in the Welland Jackfish 6-2 victory over the London Majors Saturday night at The Pond.
The Jackfish broke their all-time season attendance record as 35,222 entered Welland Stadium in 2024 in their sixth sellout of the season.
Welland still has three home dates to close out the regular season.
Two local products led the Jackfish as Chippawa native Brandon Underhill pitched seven solid innings, while Dupuis of St. Catharines had two hits, scored three runs, and played three ten-bell defensive plays in the win as Welland improved to an IBL best (26-9).
"That was a big win after dropping two straight to Barrie," said Jackfish skipper Brian Essery who celebrated his 50th birthday with a Gatorade shower after the contest.
"Dupuis and Underhill were great tonight. Dupuis took three base hits away, and had a great game at the plate.
As we approach the playoffs you'll see more of the small ball to generate some things and put more pressure on the defence."
Welland will play their fifth game in six games Sunday afternoon when they visit the Kitchener Panthers.
