By ROD MAWHOOD
The Welland Jackfish celebrated 80's Prom Night in style, but in the end lost their Saturday night date with the London Majors 9-7.
It was Weiland's (7-1) first defeat of the season.
The Major opened leads of 1-0 and 8-3 before the Jackfish battled back with a four-run seventh inning to make things close.
"Definitely not our best game by any means - both sides of the ball we struggled tonight," said Welland Manager Brian Essery.
Jake Sanford went 4-for-5 at the plate in the loss, while Robert Mullen homered and continued his hot start to the season at the plate, now hitting .387.. Mullen is now tied for the league lead in home runs with five. on the campaign.
"Sanford had a great night with hits in key situations," Essery added.
The highlight for the fans was the Jackfish starting lineup entering the field in a limousine, and a real-life wedding proposal.
The Welland specialty Prom Night jerseys were auctioned off during the game in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters Niagara.
Welland visits Toronto Sunday afternoon, Guelph Tuesday evening, before welcoming Hamilton in a make-up rainout game Wednesday night.
