Jackfish edge Cardinals 5-4

The Welland Jackfish continued their strong start to the 2026 Canadian Baseball League season Sunday afternoon, edging the Hamilton Cardinals 5-4 in a tightly contested battle at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.

The victory improved the defending champions to 8-2 on the season and capped off a successful weekend for the Jackfish, who continue to establish themselves among the league's early leaders.

Welland built a lead and then withstood a late push from the Cardinals to secure the one-run victory. Hamilton refused to go away quietly, keeping the pressure on throughout the afternoon, but the Jackfish pitching staff came through when it mattered most.

The Jackfish offence once again found timely hits and manufactured enough runs to support another solid effort on the mound. In a game where every run proved critical, Welland's ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities was ultimately the difference.

Hamilton battled until the final out, cutting the deficit to a single run, but the Jackfish were able to close the door and leave the Steel City with an important road win.

The victory marked Welland's second win in three days and continued the club's momentum heading into another busy week of Canadian Baseball League action.

The Jackfish return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Chatham-Kent before returning home Thursday evening to host the Brantford Red Sox at Welland Stadium.
