Jackfish edge Panthers for sixth straight win

By ROD MAWHOOD

The Welland Jackfish ran their win streak to six games with a 4-3 win over the Kitchener Panthers Saturday night.

Ben Abram was the catalyst in Weiland's latest win.

The big right-handed starter pitched seven strong innings of one-run, three-hit, five-strikeout baseball.

"Ben was great again, he gives us a great effort every game - he was excellent tonight," proclaimed Jackfish Manager Brian Essery.

Abram's battery mate, Robert Mullen, led the way offensively with two hits and two RBI, while Gio Morello and Brendan Luther also chipped in with a pair of hits apiece.

Essery went on to praise the Panthers in defeat as Kitchener's ninth-inning rally fell just short.

"It's good to have close games. Those types of games prepare us for the playoffs.

Credit to Kitchener and their starter (Evan) Elliott - he was very good tonight."

Welland now visits Chatham-Kent Sunday, and Guelph Tuesday, before hosting Kitchener Friday night.
