Jackfish bats smash reigning champs

WELLAND - With home field playoff implications on the table for the Welland Jackfish, Thursday night the Fish played one of their best games of the year.

Barrie has won all four previous meetings against the Jackfish this season including two this past Sunday in the leagues first double header of the season. Thursday night though saw Euclides Leyer make his tenth start on the mound for the Jackfish and was looking for his seventh victory.

After giving up an early run in the second inning, the star righty was excellent the rest of the way.  Leyer went six innings, only allowed one earned run while walking three but struck out five.  Thursday night also saw an explosion at the plate offensively for the Jackfish as well.

One through nine, the team was able to step up and prove they are to not a team to be taken lightly. Asbury-Heath, Nicholson, Dadson, Mercier, and Feuerstake each had two hits. After the dust was kicked off everyone’s cleats on “Country Night” at the Pond, the Jackfish won the game 6-1 and improved to 18-17.

With only one more regular season game left to be played on Friday night in Hamilton, focus will shift to the post season which is expected to start no earlier than Wednesday August 7th
