Jackfish offence stays hot

KITCHENER – After scoring 15 runs the previous night, Welland’s offence stayed hot to tie their single-game run record in a 23-2 win in Kitchener on Thursday.
Jackfish slugger Robert Mullen continued his torrid start to the season, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI. He leads the IBL with eight longballs and is tied with Toronto’s Marcus Knecht with 19 RBI.
Jonah Weisner went 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI, Brendan Luther hit a solo home run as part of a three-hit night, Brandon Hupe went 4-for-7 with a solo blast, Greyson Barrett drilled a two-run home run, Sam Cawker went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored three times, Matteo Porcellato drove in two on three hits, and Tyson Gomm added an RBI.
Welland starting pitcher Teodoro Ortega (3-0) went the minimum five innings for the win. He allowed a run on three hits while walking three and striking out 10.
Kitchener’s Andy Vargas (0-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. He walked five and struck out five.
Lucas Lefevbre had one of the Panthers’ three hits, an RBI double in the fifth inning. Iyad Ansari’s groundout scored Klaus Aplevich for the second run.
