Jackfish open 2022 campaign with impressive win

1,145 take in opening night at The Pond

WELLAND - Welland Jackfish Manager Brian Essery has said for weeks his club would bring a fun, entertaining brand of baseball, with a ton of stolen bases to fans across Niagara this season.

If opening night was any indication, Essery's proclamation will indeed stand true.

The Jackfish swiped four bases in an 8-1 romp over the Brantford Redsox, in front of 1,145 raucous fans at Welland Stadium.

Jake Harford pitched six solid innings, striking out six, to pick up the win, while Chris Boatto struck out in three innings of relief to register the save.

"Jake was great," said Essery inside a jubilant Jackfish clubhouse after the contest. "We knew we were going to get a solid outing out of him. He pounds the (strike) zone and gives us a chance to win every time out.

And what can you say about Boatto? That's exactly what we needed to finish the game."

St. Catharines native Tyler Dupuis went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in his Welland debut.  Returnee, and Niagara Falls native, Eric Marriott also had two hits in the victory. Brandon Nicholson stole a pair of bases, Gio Morello and Mike Wagner one.

Essery actually thought his team recorded more than four stolen bases.

"I thought it was six of seven to be honest. That's our game. We play fast and have an entire team of athletes.

The hometown crowd didn't go unnoticed to Essery and the club.

"It was a great crowd , and we appreciate all the support they provide us," Essery said.

"Excellent to get the first game out of the way."

The Jackfish now welcome the London Majors to Welland Stadium Saturday afternoon. First pitch flies at 1:05 pm.
