Jackfish outlast Red Sox

By ROD MAWHOOD

Welland Jackfish Manager Brian Essery was able to use his entire bench in a 15-8 win over the Brantford Red Sox in Intercounty Baseball League action Thursday night in the Rose City.

No fewer than 14 Jackfish players stepped to the plate as shortstop and St. Catharines native Tyler Dupuis led the way driving in four runs.

Original Welland Jackfish Greg Marco was able to register a hit in what may have been his final game for the club.

Fellow catcher, and Welland native, Ryan Potrecz homered in his lone at bat, and may have finished the season with a perfect 1.000 batting average.

Potrecz is a single shy of the season cycle.

"It was nice to get everyone in, that was the plan before the game and will be the same for Saturday. (Welland's final regular season game).

So nice to see Greg (Marco) get that base hit in his last at bat. He's been with us since 2019, and is just a great teammate," explained Essery.

"Also, it was a great moment in the eighth (inning) when Ryan Potrecz hit that pinch hit two-run home run."

With the post-season set to begin next week, Welland welcomes Toronto to close out their regular season Saturday night at The Pond.

It's Fan Appreciation Night, and first pitch is set to fly at 6:05 pm.
