Jackfish pound Panthers

Welland improves to 14-5 on the season

By Rod Mawhood

Every Welland Jackfish starter recorded at least a hit in a 16-4 victory over the Kitchener Panthers.

The Jackfish would pound out 22 hits in total to improve to an IBL best (14-5) on the season.

Catcher Sam Cawker led the home side with four hits and four RBI, while Matteo Porcellato, Brandon Nicholson and Ethan Hunt all had three hits on the night.

"Ya, we brought the same intensity from our last game in Toronto," explained Welland Manager Brian Essery.  "We just have to bring that Saturday night against London."

Jake Harford picked up the win for the Jackfish, while Brett Lawson and newly acquired Deivy Mendez pitched solid in relief.

Mendez, a native of the Dominican Republic, was making his Welland debut and received a rousing ovation from the 1,164 fans in attendance.

"The plan for Mendez is to be a back end guy for us," Essery said. "We certainly liked what we saw tonight."

Welland welcomes London Saturday night for 'Bark at the Park' night. First pitch flies at 6:05 pm.
