Jackfish pull up their socks in win over Brantford

By ROD MAWHOOD

It all came together for the Welland Jackfish Thursday night at home.

Quality pitching and clutch hitting led the Jackfish to a 9-3 victory over the Brantford Red Sox.

Jonah Weisner, Matteo Porcellato and Brandon Hupe all had two hits apiece. In fact, Weisner, Porcellato and Brendan Luther all reached base four times.

"Much needed win at home tonight," said Jackfish Manager Brian Essery.

Jose Dominguez went six strong innings, striking out six Brantford batters to pick up the win. And for the first time in franchise history, Welland used three Dominican pitchers in the same game.

Euclides Layer pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Deivy Mendez a perfect ninth.

"Yes, the pitching tonight was planned out regardless of the score," Essery said.

Halen Knoll replaced Dominguez, striking out the side in the seventh inning.

"We were really good on defense which set the tone for us. Two big double plays early to get out of tough situations. It was a solid game all around for us," added Essery.

The Jackfish next see action Saturday night at home against the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers. It's 'Stompers Night' at The Pond as the Fish will honour one of the most iconic sporting franchises in Niagara history. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive free Stompers pennants.
