The Welland Jackfish wrapped up a successful weekend on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 at Dominico Field.

The victory improved Welland's record to 5-2 and a return to the top of the Canadian Baseball League standings.

The Jackfish jumped on Toronto early, scoring three times in the opening inning and never looking back. Welland added two more runs in the fourth before tacking on an insurance marker in the ninth.

Yoilan Quinonez earned the victory in his first start of the season, tossing five shutout innings. The right-hander scattered six hits, walked nobody and struck out three.

"Yoilan set the tone for us right from the first inning," said Jackfish Manager Brian Essery. "He attacked the zone, worked quickly and gave us exactly what we needed."

Danny Howat worked the next 2.1 innings before Owen Ozanich closed out the contest with 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two.

Offensively, the Jackfish pounded out 12 hits.

Jonah Weisner led the way with a four-hit afternoon, finishing 4-for-5 with an RBI. Justin Gideon added a pair of hits with his first home run of the season, while Brendan Luther collected two hits, scored twice and knocked in a pair.

Bryce Arnold also chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

Welland's offence capitalized on Toronto miscues, while the pitching staff continually worked out of trouble despite allowing 11 hits.

The Maple Leafs finally broke through with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, but Ozanich shut the door to preserve the victory.

The Jackfish return home Thursday night when they host the Brantford Red Sox at Welland Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
