Jackfish Sign Colorado Rockies Prospect Wilson Soriano

WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish, presented by North Welland BIA, is pleased to announce the signing of short stop Wilson Soriano for the 2019 season.

As the calendar flips to the opening month of the IBL season, the Welland Jackfish have added a multi-tool sparkplug expected to feature prominently in the lineup and anchor the defence.

Wilson Soriano, a 27-year-old from the Dominican Republic with more than 500 games in affiliated baseball, is heading to Welland to join the Jackfish.

Soriano spent eight seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization, advancing as high as the Double-A level in 2016. He attended Major League Spring Training camp with the Rockies in 2016 and 2017 and has more than 100 games of professional experience at both second base and third base, as well as all three outfield positions.

“His versatility and speed will be a huge plus for the Jackfish this summer as we needed an everyday guy who can anchor a defence,” said Jackfish GM Jason McKay. “Add to that his experience and ability to play multiple positions, we think he will contribute in a number of ways on and off the field.”

Most recently, Soriano spent the 2017 season with the single-A Lancaster Jethawks, stealing 30 bases and hitting .281 in 263 at-bats.

At the Double-A level in 2016 with the Eastern League’s Hartford Yard Goats, Soriano hit .317 with a .733 OPS in 60 at-bats while playing five positions.

In 1,652 career at-bats in affiliated baseball, he hit .264 with 143 stolen bases.
