Jackfish Sign Schmidt for 2019
WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish, members of the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) today announced the signing of first baseman Matt Schmidt for the 2019 season.
Schmidt, 26, returns to the IBL after spending a portion of the 2018 season with the Garden City Wind of the Pecos League. Before joining the Pecos League, the Dundee, Illinois native suited up for the Burlington Herd and Guelph Royals in 2017. During that season, Schmidt would record five doubles, seven home runs and twenty-seven RBI in twenty-nine games played.
“I’m beyond excited to sign with the Jackfish this summer” said Schmidt. “The dedicated staff have been forming a winning mentality team over the offseason. Bringing that to Welland for their first year back in the IBL will be a great summer for baseball fans. Opening day can’t come soon enough! “
A Chicago State University alumni suited up for the Cougars for three seasons and was named a 2013-14 CSU Scholar Athlete and 2013-14 Academic All-WAC.
“Matt is the kind of player that any team would be happy to have on the roster” said Jackfish General Manager Jason McKay. “Matt works hard and shows up every day prepared and ready to perform at a high level. He hits for both power and average; the fans of Welland will love his hustle and work ethic.”
