Jackfish to replace Bat Boy with Ball Pig
WELLAND - The Welland Jackfish, Niagara's unique and exciting sports team, announced today that starting with the 2022 season, the traditional batboy will be replaced with a Ball Pig.
The Ball Pig, which will be selected by a local Niagara farm, will trot out game baseballs to the umpire before and during the game. The yet-to-be-named pig will don an official Welland Jackfish helmet and uniform and perform most of the same duties as the traditional batboy.
"When our batboy Carter retired after the 2021 season, we knew we had to find someone just as good," said Jackfish President Ryan Harrison. "When no one could come close to the speed and accuracy of Carter, we decided as a team to really go outside the box for our next batboy, and well settle for a ball boy and then not even a boy at all."
The Jackfish will hold a name the pig contest starting in April with the winner receiving a year's supply of pepperoni sticks and 2022 Season Tickets.
