Jackfish use the long ball to pound the Panthers

By ROD MAWHOOD

The Welland Jackfish battled back from a 4-0 second-inning deficit, shutting down the Kitchener Panthers the rest of the way in an 11-4 final.

Jake Sanford went 4-for-5 at the plate, homering twice and driving in three, while Ben Abram allowed only one earned run over seven solid innings.

"Definitely nice to battle back after going down four early," said Jackfish Manager Brian Essery.

"Ben gives us a chance every night. We knew he'd settle in and shut it down.

Nice to see Sanford with some thump, two (homeruns) to the deepest part of the park. That's good for us moving into the playoffs."

Greyson Barrett also went deep for the home side, as Abram, Brandon Underhill and Caleb Feuerstake shutout Kitchener over the final seven innings.

Welland now embarks on a three-game road trip before hosting Brantford next Thursday night.
