Jackfish win streak snapped at 12 games

By ROD MAWHOOD

The Welland Jackfish had their season-long win streak snapped at 12 games in a 4-3 loss to the Hamilton Cardinals Monday night at Welland Stadium.

In front of a Canada Day sellout crowd, the Cardinals opened a 3-0 second-inning lead only to see the Jackfish rally to eventually tie things at three in the bottom of the eighth inning.

A Luis Bernardo ninth inning solo home run proved to be the difference for Hamilton.

Welland starter Ben Abram went the distance in defeat, striking out 10.

"Abram was great again. He deserved a better result for sure," Jackfish Manager Brian Essery explained.

Jake Sanford had three hits to lead the Fish at the dish.

"We're disappointed that we lost tonight, but it's only one game," added Essery. "We had a nice 12-game win streak. We struggled a little at the plate the past two games, but we'll be fine.

Great crowd tonight. We really appreciate their support."

The (15-4) Jackfish continue their mini three-game homestand Thursday night against the Brantford Red Sox.

First pitch flies at 7:20 pm.
