The Welland Jackfish are a win away from capturing their first IBL Championship after winning their third straight game, this time 4-2 over the Barrie Baycats.
Alberto Guerrero pitched five solid innings as the Jackfish trailed 1-0 into the seventh inning.
Guerrero gave us everything he had," Welland manager Brian Essery said.
St. Catharines native Tyler Dupuis would come through with a clutch double to give the Jackfish a 2-1 lead in the seventh, but Barrie would tie in the bottom of the seventh before a Gio Morello solo home run - his first dinger of the finals - would give Welland a lead they didn't relinquish.
"Gio has had a great playoff, and has put the team on his back. - what a home run," Essery said.
Deivy Mendez picked up the win shutting the door the rest of the way as the Jackfish can wrap up the best-of-seven series Saturday night in Barrie.
A night after winning the game with a two-run home run, catcher Carlos Martinez threw out Canice Ejoh in the ninth inning to end the game as over 2,000 Welland Jackfish FINatics left The Pond jubilant.
"Just keep it rolling," Essery added.
