Make it 9 wins in a row for the Fish

Welland tops Toronto in tumultuous game

By ROD MAWHOOD

The Welland Jackfish picked up their ninth straight victory in an interesting 7-5 final over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night at The Pond.

Five members of the Maple Leafs were ejected in this one.

Welland opened a 3-0 first-inning lead, before the visitors would storm back to take a 4-3 in the seventh inning.

However the Jackfish would rally with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, and two more in the eighth before holding on for the two-run win.

Jake Sanford had a perfect night at the plate going 4-for-4 with a run scored. Sanford raised his season batting average to .412.

"Definitely nice to see Jake break out tonight," said Welland Manager Brian Essery. "Great hustle on the last infield hit"

Asked whether he'd ever been involved in a game with five ejections, Essery offered this:

"That was pretty wild, but sometimes things get heated and that's competitive sports. I'm just happy we got the win, Toronto is always a tough team to play against."

The Jackfish will try to make it 10 straight wins Monday night in Kitchener.
