The Welland Jackfish, proudly wearing Rose City Timber Tiger jerseys, solidified their hold on top spot in the Intercounty Baseball League standings with a 9-3 victory over the Barrie Baycats in front of 1,678 fans Thursday night at The Pond.

Ben Abram pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win, while Deivy Mendez struck out four Barrie batters to record the five-out save - his tenth of the season.

"Ben was great again tonight," proclaimed Welland manager Brian Essery. "He's been such a horse for us.

Deivy shutting it down again, he's done that all year."

The Jackfish closer has not given up an earned run in 18 appearances this season.

Every Rose City starter recorded at least one hit, as catcher Carlos Martinez and outfielder Hogan Brown both drove in a pair.

"We battled tonight at the plate, that was the key," Essery said. "We were solid through the lineup."

Welland welcomes Toronto Saturday night holding a three-game lead atop the IBL standings.

It's Tropical Night and a post-game Fireworks bash.
