Maple Leafs Have “Ruff” Day The Pond

WELLAND - The Welland Jackfish sent the Toronto Maple Leafs home with not much to smile about as they were shutout by a score of 6-0 on Bark in the Park day at Welland Stadium.

The Welland Jackfish were coming off a huge victory in London on Saturday night and Field Manager Brian Essery wanted to keep the bats going and take advantage at home.  “We were very good in London and need to be great again today to beat Toronto”.

The Jackfish were led offensively by Brendon Dadson who went three for five and scored a run.  As good as the Jackfish were with the bats on Saturday afternoon, their pitching and timely defensive plays, came through as the difference maker in the ball game.  Starting Pitcher Christian Young picked up his first victory of the season after throwing six innings, giving up no runs and allowing only five hits.

Young was taken out of the ball game in the top of the seventh inning after the Maple Leafs loaded the bases with no outs. Lefty, Ryan Bench was called into the game and was placed into a very tough situation in a tight ball game.  After the dust was settled Bench pitched his way out of the inning keeping the Maple Leafs off the scoreboard.

Toronto’s Marek Deska was the losing pitcher after throwing five innings, giving up two runs, four hits, and had four strike outs.

The Jackfish will now celebrate Canada Day and rest until Thursday July 4, when the Hamilton Cardinals return to Welland Stadium.
